When I was watching it, I wanted to laugh, and I felt rather ashamed of the quality of the opening ceremony. This is the first Youth Olympic Games, it is at an international standard. Where is the creativity in the opening ceremony? Where is the sense honour and pride that Singapore is able to host the first Youth Olympic Games?

I was disappointed by the show. I see no link at all to the Youth Olympic Games, but rather I felt that it was more of a National Day Celebration. Emil is right in saying that "opening ceremony totally missed the point. YOG is about promoting sports to the youth and to encourage them to take up sports. But yet, it is promoting racial harmony?" I totally agree. This is the first Youth Olympic Games, hosted in Singapore, where thousands of young athletes will come here to compete. But the quality of the opening ceremony -- I was appalled by it. I have to say that the ceremony is not up to an international standard, and could leave a negative impression on the athletes that Singapore is unable to grasp the main theme of the Youth Olympic Games, and that Singapore is unable to put up a spectacular show.

Part which I hated most about the opening ceremony :
1) The monster-.- Look at that monster, it was done so simply and ugly. What is the purpose of including the story of the monster in the Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony? I do not see any relationship at all. A better storyline could replace it. The strings are also dangling at it looked unglam. =.=

The aims of the Youth Olympic Games is to promote sports to young generations, but the performance shows otherwise. I do not even think that there is an element of promoting sports to the youths, but rather, like what Emil said, showing foreigners the diverse culture of Singapore.

A failure, I have to say.

National Day Celebration :D

Happy belated birthday to Singapore, who celebrated its 45th birthday on 9 August 2010! ^^

Well I didn't really celebrate it, but I wondered why. Being part of Singapore, shouldn't I be celebrating it,watching the NDP parade, instead of surfing the net and doing work? I can say that it is not only me, but there is an increasing number of people who do not really care about National Day anymore. Why is this so? Is it due to the lack of patriotism? Or Singaporeans just do not want to express their patriotism?

Firstly, I would say that there I could not feel the any National Day atmosphere. Even though banners are hung to inform us about the National Day Celebration, I could not feel the sense of enthusiasm and sense of love for the country. Do people still feel patriotic, or are they living in their own world of theirs, oblivious and can't be bothered by what is happening around them? I think, Singaporeans not wanting to express their patriotism is partly due to the sense of conservativeness they have. They do not feel free to express their love for the country as they do not want to stand out among the crowd and attract attention. This is where I think the problem lies.

So, why are there lesser Singaporeans bothered about the National Day Celebration nowadays? Probably it is because of the hectic and speedy lifestyle people have due to the fast-paced society, there are more important things such as work to take note of, instead of sitting down comfortably watching the NDP celebration. In the present society, everything is so fast-paced, where a moment of rest can bring you down, making you have a difficult time to catch up with the rest. With the massive amount of pressure and workload pressing down on Singaporeans, how can they still have the free time to show their loyalty to the country and say the pledge at 8.10 pm together with the rest of Singapore on National Day?

However, I still firmly believe that each and every one of us still care about our country and we are still loyal to our country in our hearts, even if we do not show it.

Competition or Values???

This has been a controversial issue in the class over last week's current affairs. I would like to provide my views, with respect to the Youth Olympic Games, and explaining why I think so.

So, which is more important - COMPETITION or VALUES

Competition in the Youth Olympic Games can undoubtely raise the standards of the athletes. In the presence of competition, the young athletes can also be motivated to train harder, and to aim for better results. They will strive to win the competition, to earn glory for their country and also to showcase their talents. I think that competition is essential for making the Youth Olympic Games successful. Imagine a game without competition, where the competitors do not care if they win or lose, just carrying on with the game, how boring will the Games be? Hence I agree that a little competition is healthy, but too much of it is not.

Over competitiveness of the athletes may not be a good thing. If they are over competitive, all that is in their minds is just to win, no matter what. Even if they had to resort to unfair means. If that is the case, then the athletes do not understand the spirit of the Games and why they are playing a sport may not be because of their passion for it, but just to win other athletes.

I strongly think that the values an athelete shoud possess gains more importance over competition. Values such as sportsmanship, respect to fellow competitors are what makes a athlete a true sportsman, no matter if he won or lost. It all boils down to the fact that the aims of the Youth Olympic Games is to inculcate moral values and sportsmanship in the young hearts and minds of the athletes through sports. The 3 prinicples of the Youth Olympic Games - Excellence, Friendship and Respect. I feel that the athletes should have these moral values, to strive for excellence, without compromising mutual respect and also to foster friendship with other competitors.

To conclude, I think that values are what matters most. Someone who only cares about winning and does not have the right values cannot be considered a true sportsman.

YOG Torch (Lantern) Relay

Long time since I last posted, now for ace. (:

Last week, the Youth Olympic Torch Relay passed Hwa Chong! xD Truly a memorable and historic moment. The whole school, including students and teachers, waited anxiously along the roadside for the torch to arrive at our school. The atmosphere was filled with anxiousness, eagerness and excitement, for me I was rather looking forward eagerly to the arrival of the torch. Thinking that it would be a spectacular sight, my hopes of seeing the magnificient torch were dashed when all I saw was a person carrying a small lantern, walking rather leisurely.

I was not expecting the lantern, but the flame torch. Nevertheless, I have to agree that to view the passing of the YOG torch(lantern) relay was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. It will go down in the history of the school and will be stored there forever. Moreover, the Olympic Flame Torch Relay has been carried out for all of the Olympic games, and has its value and importance. I think that it should continue with this tradition of the Torch Relay as it symbolises the spirit of the Olympic Games, perserverance. The flame, which never stops burning till the end of the Games, symbolizes the never-giving up spirit.
So, is sacrificing 1 hour of curriculum time for witnessing the Torch Relay worthwhile? Even though it was well below what we had expected, I still feel that it was worthwhile. Think about it, this is the first Youth Olympic Games, hosted in Singapore. The first. We may not have a chance to witness the Torch Relay anymore in the future. Thus I think that it would be worthwhile as it is something that not everybody can get to see and experience.

Witnessing the torch relay, I suddenly thought about the aims of the Youth Olympic Games, a new initiative by the Olympic Council. I wondered if it would be successful in teaching the young athletes the 3 values of the YOG - Excellence, Respect and Friendship. I wondered if competition is necessary in raising standards, or are the values more important. I will be discussing in my next post. See ya! ^^

Rainbow Death

Rainbow Death

America did not foresee

Green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!

Expecting others to pay a high price.

Now thinking twice?

Toll on the innocent and unborn.

Omnipotent and disregarding who will mourn.

Reflective about all the illness, birth defects and prematurely dead.

All the deceit continues to spread.

Nefariously America led astray -

Generations untold WILL pay -

Execrable effects of agent orange spray!

Hubert Wilson

1) Point Of View

The poet is criticising America for being unable to forsee the consequences by using agent orange. The tone used is rather harsh. This is evident when he said "America did not foresee". This shows that the poet felt that the next generation would be affected adversly by the use of Agent Orange, which results in many consequences. He also knew that many innocent people will be affected when he said "Toll on the innocent and unborn". He is aware of the many consequences of using Agent Orange as he said "Reflective about all the illness, birth defects and prematurely dead".

2) Situation and Setting

Depressing

Evid : "Generations untold WILL pay -"

: "Toll on the innocent and unborn."

The poet is aware that by using Agent Orange, many innocent lives will be affected, and that the next generation will have to pay the price of using Agent Orange in the present generation. The capitalised "will" shows that the poet is sure that there will surely be dire consequences on the people. His anger and firmness that people will suffer due to the use of Agent Orange could also be seen from the capitalised "will".

3) Language and Diction

Potpourri

According the the dictionary, "potpourri" means a a As potpourri is a nice-smelling mixture of flowers, the use of "potpourri" in the poem expresses irony. In this poem, potpourri is used to show the smell of death and the many colours of chemicals used in the warfare, killing many people.

Use of words revolving around death

In this poem, the poet uses several words which are related to death, which makes the poem rather dark and dull. He uses words such as "death", "dead", "toll" and "mourn". This actually highlights the fact that hundreds and thousands of people will suffer or die from the use of Agent Orange. It shows that innocent people who were not involved in the war were implicated and have to pay the price of using Agent Orange.

Personal Response

After reading the poem "Rainbow Death" by Hubert Wilson, it made me think about the aftermath of war and the many impacts war would have on the innocent people. I feel that war will only bring about deaths and casualties and nothing else. It is harsh and people who were not involved will also have to pay the price of using chemical warfare. I agree with the poet that use of chemical warfare is extremely harmful to everyone and may cause long term suffering to the people. I think that another purpose of Hubert writing the poem is to remind everyone that we should preserve peace in the world and should not go to a war with one another.

SABBATICALS :D

Yay hit my 4th blog post. This post will be about my thoughts and feelings of the sabbaticals, do share your views too :D.

Let's start. Firstly, I think that the sabbatical courses are very meaningful. These courses allow us to be exposed to other things, rather than be in our classroom everyday having the same old lessons. We can learn new skills in each course, which might somehow help us in the future. Moreover, I enjoy the courses as we are ablt to learn new things not taught in the classroom in a fun and interesting way. During this sabbatical week, we can also relax and take a break from all those schoolwork and tests. It is a platform where we can enjoy, learn, and have a great new experience! :)

For me, my sabbatical for this term is Science Eureka xD. In this course, we will mainly just do some science experiments guided by two Secondary 4 people O: I find this course quite interesting as we are able to do many experiments which we will probably not have the chance to do it during class.

Please share your views here and have a fun learning experience ahead for the next few days of sabbaticals! :)

Home Learning ):

Ello.. So this post will be about the Home Learning program which we had last week. Ok I'm going to complaint about everything regarding the Home Learning D:<. Personally, I think that this Home Learning thing is not effective at all. I simply do not understand what the purpose is for carrying out the Home Learning program. First of all, I feel that we could learn more efficiently in classrooms as compared to completing work online. For me, I find that I could not really absorb everything that teachers post online for us to read and go through, and that it is easier to digest information in the classroom. Secondly, when we have questions pertaining to the topic, there would be difficulty to clarify our doubts via email or other online ways. Also, the time allocated for each subject is not enough to complete the assigned work, resulting in our break to be used up for completing the work. I would rather go back to school to have normal lessons than staying at home to do online learning as learning takes place more effectively and efficiently in the classroom and doubts could be clarified at once, as compared to individual online learning at home, which I think less information could be absorbed. In conclusion, I hope that NO MORE home learning will be carried out in the future, unless there are emergencies ( pardon the caps o.o)

I will be doing about the Naturalist task :)

Mockingbirds
Mockingbirds are well-known for their ability to mimick the cries of other species. They are a kind of grey birds with streamlined body that is medium-sized with angular proportions and a long twitchy tail. There are several species of mockingbirds, such as the Northern Mockingbird and the Southern Mockingbird. Mockingbirds thrive in open grassy areas to feed, thick thorny shrubs to hide their nest. However, their habitat may range froma desert to a city.

I think that Maycomb is a city with many berry and fruit trees. This is because mockingbirds mainly feeds on winter berries and fruits, therefore there will surely be mockingbirds living in Maycomb. Since there is a wide variety of berries and fruits for the mockingbirds, Maycomb would be a suitable habitat for mockingbirds to stay in.

As Harper Lee says in her book 'To Kill A Mockingbird', "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy, that's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird". This has a deeper meaning as there are several characters in the novel who are potrayed as mockingbirds. A good example would be Tom Robinson. He has done nothing wrong, yet people are still prejudiced against him and wanted to harm him.

Multiple Itelligence

Hi ^^ Didn't blog on anything for a long time xD. So this post will be about how I feel about the Multiple Intelligence Test which I took. Ok, the above picture may be quite blur, so I am strongest in Music and weakest in Logical ><. I feel that there are several plus and minus points about this test. Firstly, I find this test quite useful and interesting as it allows us to find out which areas we are strong at and which areas we are weaker at. By knowing our personal strengths and weaknesses, we will know which areas of Intelligences we must work at and thus further enhance and develop our strengths and also continue to improve our weaknesses. However, the Multiple Intelligences Test will only produce accurate results if the person taking the test answers the questions truthfully. Moreover, I do not think that by just answering some questions will accurately give a result of the intelligences which we are strong at and/or weak at.

In conclusion, I feel that this Multiple Intelligence Test will help us in our lives as there are several types of intelligence, and everybody will definitely have a few which they are very strong at and a few that they are very weak at. (If you can't the results, please zoom in xD)

Poet- Mark Strand

Hmm... I would say that Mark Strand is my favourite poet. I just read some of his poems and found that he uses figurative language, like personification, in many of his poems and he tries to manipulate our emotions and thoughts by using figurative language. When " Bold Types"Magazine interviewed Mark Strand, he said that he was "not concerned with truth, nor with conventional notions of what is beautiful". This is true in many of his poems. According to the interview, Mark Strand finds beauty in unsettling stillness. When asked if he was a romantic poet during one of the interviews, he answered that most of the poets are romantic poets, they dont't have a choice.

Biography
Mark Strand was born in Canada, Prince Edward Island on 1934. In 1979, he has been awarded the Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets, a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Award in 1987, the Bollingen Prize in 1993.

Some of his poems
Eating Poetry by Mark Strand
Ink runs from the corners of my mouth.
There is no happiness like mine
.I have been eating poetry.
The librarian does not believe what she sees.
Her eyes are sadand she walks with her hands in her dress.
The poems are gone.
The light is dim.
The dogs are on the basement stairs and coming up.
Their eyeballs roll, their blond legs burn like brush.
The poor librarian begins to stamp her feet and weep
.She does not understand.
When I get on my knees and lick her hand,
she screams.
I am a new man.
I snarl at her and bark.I
I romp with joy in the bookish dark.

Other of his collection of poems include: Dark Harbor, The Continuous Life, etc.

Links : http://famouspoetsandpoems.com/poets/mark_strand/biography
             http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0200/strand/
             http://www.pshares.org/issues/article.cfm?prmarticleID=283

Poem

Sleeping In The Forest by Mary Oliver
I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pocketsfull of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

The figurative language used in this poem are personification, hyperbole and simile."The earth remembered me" is a personification as it makes the earth appear human-like by using the word "remember" for the earth. Also, "she took me back tenderly" also personifies the earth as it makes the earth appear very "tender" by the use of the phrase. "Arranging her dark skirts". Can the earth arrange any skirts? No, thus this phrase is also a personification. Thus, the poet used personification to make the earth to appear a "tender human" in the readers' minds.
"White fire of stars" is a hyperbole as it exaggerates the large number of stars in the sky, creating an image in the readers' mind that the stars resembles a white fire in the night sky. The poet used hyperbole as she wanted exaggerate the beautiful scenery of the white fire of stars shining in the night sky.
"My thoughts, and they floated as light as moths" is a simile the thoughts are describes as light floating moths. The poet used the word "light" to describe the thoughts, most probably she wanted to create an image in the readers' minds that the person is very calm and had no worries.

I like this poem as it evokes a very calm scenery in the forest when I first read it. It emphasises what is happening in the forest during the night. Personally, I think that it is trying to tell us to appreciate nature's beautiful side, like the "white fire of stars". Also, the earth is described as "tender", which makes me think that the earth is very fragile and easily damaged. Thus I think that the poet is attempting to tell us that we should protect the beautiful nature and not destroy it.

?

Found this is Rui Yu's blog. xD FUN!

Girlish
[ ] I like at least one shade of pink.
[x] I don't like being messy
[x] My belongings are organized
[ ] I don't like rock music ( I don't know the differences between different types of music!)
[ ] I like wearing accessories
[ ] Bright colors amaze me
[ ] I hate black
[ ] I go to the salon once a week
[ ] I comb my hair almost all the time
[x] I bring my phone with me everywhere
Total: 3

Boyish
[ ] I like wearing baggy pants
[x I play video games
[ ] I like Akon ( Who is he?)
[ ] I like wearing jackets with hoods
[ ]I'm too lazy to do chores ( I do some sometimes^^)
[x] I don't like shopping unless it's for me
[x] I like to go bungee jumping
[ ] I like being sweaty
[ ] I'm a big fan of marvel heroes
[ ] I always wear perfume
Total:3

Nerdy
[ ] I always carry a pen in my purse or pocket
[ ] I enjoy studying
[x]I wear glasses
[ ] I'm a straight-A student (PSLE- 2 A* and 2 A, but now some Bs and Cs D:)
[ ] I've never skipped any class in my whole life (Hah... Have been wanting to post about this for a very long time but did not :P. Anyway, here goes.^^ Ok, from 5 June to 12 June, I was in Korea. It was fun! When I was there, it was free of stress and work, but once I reached Singapore... A total difference- -. Ok that is not the main point. Mainly, I wish to compare between Koreans and Singaporeans. In my own view, I think that Koreans have much more discipline than Singaporeans. Take for example, on the escalator, all people in Korea keeps to the right side at all times, leaving the left side of the escalator for people to walk. Compare this to Singapore, where people just keep to both sides of the escalator without any space left to walk. Also, when we asked for directions, the Koreans were pointing to us directions patiently, though they sometimes got quite fed up due to communication problems(they did not show the "fed-up" expression though!). However, one thing I noticed about Koreans is that they seldom say "excuse me". Normally, they just push and shove their way through and I got pushed a number of times>.<. Well, this post ends here... -Miss Korea- D:

I rather be a city rat than a country rat(?)

A city rat? Or a country rat? Or both? Well, personally I think that there are some positive and negative points of being either a city or country rat. First, I will talk about the positive and negative points of a city rat.

When you see the word "city", what will you think of? Most people will think of a busy place bustling with people rushing around. In a city, you will have to work hard in order to keep up with the society and not to be left behind. However, technology in a city is far more advanced than that in a country. People's lifes are made much more easier by the advanced technology. Though technology is advanced, the pace of life of city people is very fast. Thus, city people will have very little time to relax and take their minds off work.

Now, I will talk about the positive and negative points of a country rat.

Unlike the busy city, the pace of life in a country is far more relaxed. People live a much carefree life in a country compared to people living in the city. However, country people do not have the kind of advanced technology. They will have to use their own hands to grow crops, unlike in the city where people just buy groceries from the supermarket.

In conclusion, I think that it is better to be a city rat BUT have a more carefree life like those of a country rat.

H1N1 VIRUS!

Oh no! The H1N1 virus is nearing Singapore! Recently countries near Singapore have been attacked by the H1N1 virus- Malaysia, Japan and some other Asia countries. We should be prepared to be attacked by the virus anytime, thus we should take the necessary precautions to keep the H1N1 virus away from us for as long as possible. For example, we can maintain high standards of hygiene and should avoid sharing utensils, etc. It is really shocking that just one virus can affect the whole world, with a large number of people found to have contracted the virus and many deaths. First SARS , then bird flu, and now H1N1?! It sure is scary that these disease can be so deadly. Hence, I hope that everyone of us should stay hygienic and healthy to avoid contracting the disease.

Torturous Thursdays~.~

Another typical Thursday... A long and tiring day... Every Thursday, I have to go for my third language class at Ghim Moh and it ends at 6.45.- - Ya, I admit that the lessons ARE fun, but the duration is a little too long... By the time I reached home, it will already be 8.00 p.m. and I still have to complete schoolwork(fortunately there are not much homework on Thursday, compared to Term 1 Thursdays~whew~). However. the good thing is that you can learn a third language, which may come to handy in the future. And a message posted on the SMB says that this third language examinations WILL be counted in our MSG starting from term 3!!! Aargh.- - Guess I really have to study hard for third language ~.~... And 9 Sec 1s classes were asked to go to support the Hwa Chong team(unfortunately I was in one of the classes- -)The atmosphere there was very tense, as many schools hung their banners all around the sports stadium and cheering for their respective schools enthusiastically. I was very bored there(- -ll), and so I chatted with my friends and looking at the time every now and then, hoping that it would end soon. Honestly, I don't see a need for Hwa Chong to send down so many students there when all the other schools are sending PROBABLY their Track And Field Team, or simply, just a FEW classes. It ended about half an hour late, we were released at 7 or later when it is stated that we would be released ar 6.30. And luckily, I will not have to go for the Judo finals!^^(yay)

Sec 1 Camp

Aaa... It really is HORRIBLE and I would DEFINETELY not want to go for this kind of camp again! Well, I didn't really like any activities there, but I participated in them though, kind of well, forced to...? Some of the activities I remembered are "Milo Pool", which we slid into the dirty muddy water, rafting, and lots of teambuilding games. Didn't manage to sleep well at all, was like fidgeting in my sleeping bag all the time...(I accidentally kicked Zheyi a few times) Also, we were being asked to sit on the grass and unfortunately, there are many insects on the grass(I hate insects). Overall, this whole camp, only 1 word to describe-HORRIBLE!

My Reading Habits

Hi! This post is about my reading habits. Normally, I will read books whenever I have the time. For example, when I am in the car, after finishing my homework for the day, etc. Currently, I am reading a book by Anthony Horowitz(assuming I have not spelt the name incorrectly. -.-) named "Granny". It is about a boy called Jordan, and his granny is simply evil and wants to harm him in any way she could. Also, I simply enjoy reading comics too!^^ Its is entertaining and can make people laugh! ~wahaha :D~ That is all, See ya!

Camp...

OH NO! Nowadays, humans are wasting more and more natural resources, such as fossil fuels, etc. But, do we really need this much? Or are we taking things for granted? This is really a disappointing act as people nowadays do not care about saving the environment. I would like to give an example. At Hwa Chong, I notice that teachers are always printing on only one side of a paper, leaving the other side blank(Oops but this is really what I noticed). I think that we should use both sides of a paper and not waste the other side by leaving it blank. Here are some of my opinions of how we can save the Earth. Firstly, we can take a shower instead of a bath, this will save a lot of water we use everyday. Next,we should practice the 3 Rs- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Also, we should turn off all electrical appliances when we do not need them. These are just some of my opinions, of course there are more. I REALLLLY hope that people will change the habit of theirs and should always save resources, and not take everything for granted. :)Go Green!

I MISS PRIMARY SCHOOL LIFE~!

I really miss my primary school life!! There is really a HUGE contrast in primary and secondary school life. In primary school, life was so much more carefree that life in secondary school, where life is so busy, with tons and tons of homework to be done. My previous primary school was Catholic High Primary, which I really want to go back once in a while. Secondary school has so many things to be done daily, like checking the Message Board, etc. Where do we have this in Primary school? Moreover, we will still have to stay back for CCAs, or stuffs like that. Where would we have time for homework??? By the time we reached home will already be very late and everyday we can only sleep for about 7 hours, or even less, maybe? To end this, I would like to say this- I REALLLLLLLLY MISS PRIMARY SCHOOL LIFE AND MY PRIMARY SCHOOL FRIENDSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For whom do I learn?

In my point of view, learning is very important. Why do I learn? I sometimes ponder about this question too. But I think that I learn because learning will allow me to have a higher chance of having a bright future. We can learn many things-from school studies to playing the piano, etc. All these will help us in crafting a bright future for ourselves. If people do not learn anything, they themselves will be the one suffering in the future. The next question- For whom do I learn? Firstly, I think that I do not learn for anyone, but instead, I learn for MYSELF. But it's true many parents care a lot about our learning, and we hope to achieve good result to make them happy. However, in the end, we still learn for ourselves, for our future.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hezy-hello.blogspot.com/2009/01/why-do-i-learn-for-whom-do-i-learn.html' title='Why do I learn? However, I would not say that it was totally Adeline, as I feel that her parents should also take up some responsibility. Adeline is probably overstressed by her parents, and could not control her emotions thus commiting suicide. However, because Adeline knew that her parents cared for her, she kept her troubles and frustration to herself by keeping a diary. So,to be precise, it was Adeline's EMOTIONS that have "killed" her. This could have been prevented if Adeline's parents did not give her too much stress. In my point of view, parents should know how fast their child can advance and should follow their pace, instead of giving them stress.

What is EDUCATION?

To me, education is an essential thing that everyone should have. Without education, people will not be able to differentiate from right to wrong. Education means the development of knowledge through learning. How or where we receive education does not matter, as long that the knowledge we gained is useful in a way or another. Teachers might not be the people whom we will always gain knowledge from. Sources of knowledge are everywhere, like newspapers, storybooks, etc. In fact, I think that people will learn at least a thing or two at the end of a day. We should always have a heart and mind that is willing to learn, and should also take the initiative to ask people things that we are unsure of.

Silver Workforce

Good afternoon everybody, I have been hired by the Manpower Ministry to give a short speech to a group of local businesses to encourage them to hire older workers like me. As you know, the economic downturn has caused many companies to retrench some of their experienced workers, causing people to be jobless. However, I think that companies should hire old people as some elderly people may not have children and have to fend for themselves. Some old people may also have more working experiences than young people. Moreover, I think that younger people will have a higher number of chances of finding a job than old people as their education level may be higher than those of older people. All in all, i am encouraging companies to hire elderly people and give them a proper job. But do not get me wrong, I am not saying that companies should not hire younger people, I am just hoping and encouraging companies to hire elderly people.
